Liz Jarvis MP welcomes announcement that the Police and Crime Commissioner position will be scrapped
Liz Jarvis, Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh, has welcomed the Government’s announcement that the PCC role will be abolished at the end of their current term in 2028 with powers transferring to mayors.
Ms Jarvis and the Liberal Democrats have long called for the abolishment of the position which has cost the taxpayer well over £100m since 2019. Sir Ed Davey MP, Liberal Democrat Leader, called on Police and Crime Commissioners to be scrapped and the money put into front line policing.
Liz Jarvis, Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh, said:
“I am glad that the Government has finally moved to abolish the Police and Crime Commissioner position. The priority must be on putting more resources into front-line policing and recruiting more officers. Many people don’t know PCCs exist, let alone know what they do – instead of putting more money into front-line policing and recruiting more officers, vast sums have been wasted on this project.
“The public want a return to proper community policing. Our local police work exceptionally hard, but they do not have enough resources, and they need more support.
“In Eastleigh, we must now see more police on our streets and the long-overdue reopening of the police station, which I will continue to fight for.”
