Liz Jarvis MP “encouraged” by Government assurance on chalk streams

19 Dec 2025

Liz Jarvis, Member of Parliament for Eastleigh, has welcomed confirmation that the Government will provide explicit protections for chalk streams as part of its overhaul of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).

Ms Jarvis said:

“I have been campaigning for greater protections for our precious chalk streams, including the River Itchen in my constituency, for some time so this is a positive step forward. Today the Minister confirmed that the new National Planning Policy Framework will explicitly recognise the impact of development on chalk streams and Local Plans will be required to identify and manage these risks.

“I am also pleased that the Minister confirmed that community input will be prioritised through pushing for greater coverage and efficiency of Local Plans, meaning local residents will have more power to ensure the right homes go in the right places.”
