Liz Jarvis, the Liberal Democrat MP has criticised Hampshire County Council’s leadership for its refusal to back track on cuts to concessionary bus passes. Ms Jarvis has campaigned with the charity Guide Dogs to reverse the cuts due to adverse effects on visually impaired people.

In a letter to Hampshire County Council in August, she called on the Council to reverse the removal of the free Companion Bus Pass and limits to free bus travel to between 9:30 am and 11:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Liz Jarvis, Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh, said:

“I believe that investing in the mobility and independence of disabled and older people is not only a matter of fairness but also a wise long-term investment in the well-being of the entire community. The human cost of these cuts has already been significant and far-reaching.

“I am extremely disappointed that Hampshire County Council seem to have failed to take into account the specific impact these changes have had on visually impaired people across Hampshire. I will be continuing to push Hampshire’s leadership to listen the concerns of the numerous charities and advocacy groups to ensure that everyone in our community can enjoy the independence and mobility they’re entitled to.”
