MP for Eastleigh, Liz Jarvis MP celebrates Lib Dem win after a railway fare freeze was announced following years of campaigning, but urged the Government to “go further” to deliver an affordable railway.

Commuters in Eastleigh are already being hammered with eye-watering costs. A season ticket between Eastleigh and London Waterloo clocks in at a whopping £6860 for five travelling days a week.

The Liberal Democrats have committed to a rail fare freeze for the last two general elections. While Ms Jarvis has welcomed the freeze it is "too little, too late", calling on the Government to introduce a long-term railway freeze ahead of this week’s Budget.

Commenting on the rail fare freeze, Liz Jarvis, Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh said

After years of campaigning, I am relieved the Government has listened to our calls and finally frozen rail fares but unfortunately this is simply too little too late.

“Residents in Eastleigh are currently coughing up hundreds of pounds every month on their commute. In the midst of a cost of living crisis, no-one should need to surrender so much of their hard earned pay check just to get to the office.

“That is why ahead of this week’s Budget, I am calling on the Government to go further and deliver on a long-term plan to create a reliable, affordable railway system that works for everyone.”
